October 1, 2019

Dear Senator Tillis,

We appreciate that you took the time this week to listen to the soldiers and families at Fort Bragg.  This could not have been easy for you.  It would be so great if you would know that, having survived this difficult event, you are strong enough to continue to listen to your constituents.

It is true that the President is more popular than you are in our state, so we understand why you would think that continuing to defend him might improve your own political fortunes.

We also understand why you are afraid of him.  He is a bully who will stop at nothing to stay in power.  He is also fighting for his life and for the lives of his family.  All of them are deeply implicated in numerous crimes.

Now he and Senator McConnell and AG Barr and apparently the head of the State Department are betting that Trump’s ability to whip people into a frenzy of hate will allow them to take over the House as well as keep the Senate and the White House.

We ask you today if you really want to be part of this plan.  Have you so totally sold your soul that you want to bet your own life on such a fragile house of cards?  Will lies win in the end, or truth?  Will brute strength crush all voices of reason, and all songs of love?  Will the earth die because a few wealthy men are determined to continue to amass wealth by cultivating hate and false conspiracy theories and crimes?

It is not too late to do the right thing and to be on the right side of history.  Please listen to those of us who are crying out for the future of our democracy, which has shown itself to be extremely fragile.  And please try to listen to your own heart and your own conscience.  At some point it will be too late, and this time is coming soon.
