Raleigh, North Carolina – In collaboration with Indivisible.Org, Tuesdays With Tillis will be participating in an action of statewide solidarity asking that Sen. Thom Tillis reverse his stand and vote to pass the “For the People Act.”

At 2 p.m. Friday, July 2, participants will gather in front of Tillis’ Raleigh office at 310 New Bern Ave, Raleigh. This gathering will be mirrored at each of  his three other North Carolina state offices.

The “For the People Act” would apply retroactively to voter suppression bills that already have passed through other state legislatures. It would establish a minimum set of standards for the administration of federal elections and would effectively overturn state laws that make it more difficult for people to vote, by:

  • increasing the number of drop-off boxes;
  • requiring no-excuse absentee voting;
  • establishing automatic voter registration; and
  • banning partisan gerrymandering and requiring independent redistricting commissions to draw congressional maps.

Election administration experts advise that many provisions of the democracy reform bill, such as the anti-gerrymandering independent redistricting commissions, will take significant time to implement before the next midterm elections. These experts explain that Congress needs to pass the bill by the end of this summer, so in order to prevent gerrymandering and voter suppression in the 2022 midterm elections, Tillis must act on the “For the People Act” before summer’s end.

Since January 2017, Tuesdays With Tillis has been holding weekly rallies outside the senator’s office or via Zoom, demanding that he support the needs of the people over the needs of his corporate donors. Volunteers wishing to know more can contact the group at  tuesdayswithtillisnc@gmail.org.
